Tobermory Distillery, nestled in the town of Tobermory on the Isle of Mull, is the island’s sole whisky producer. Initially known as Ledaig, it was established in 1798 by John Sinclair and has since undergone multiple changes in ownership. Presently owned by Burn Stewart Distillers under the umbrella of Distell Group Limited, the distillery has weathered various closures and rebuilds, with notable events including a significant renovation in 1972 and acquisition by Burn Stewart Distillers in 1991, later absorbed into Distell in 2013.
Tobermory specialises in crafting unpeated malt for its signature Tobermory Single Malt and a peated whisky called Ledaig. Their production process involves a copper-domed mash tun, Oregon pine washbacks, and four spirit stills, with maturation occurring in bourbon and sherry casks.
