Benriach distillery, a single malt Scotch whisky producer in Speyside was established by John Duff in 1898 and it is located south of Elgin, near the Longmorn Distillery. The two distilleries were connected by a private railway with a steam locomotive, the Puggy, for transporting coal, barley, peat, and barrels.

Production at Benriach halted in 1900 following the bankruptcy of Pattison’s whisky, a major purchaser, but its maltings continued to supply Longmorn. The distillery resumed spirit production in 1965 under Glenlivet Distillers Ltd. In 1978, it was acquired by Seagrams, which later became part of Pernod Ricard in 2001, reducing Benriach’s operation to just three months a year.

In 2004, an independent consortium, the Benriach Distillery Company Limited, acquired the distillery, followed by the acquisitions of Glendronach in 2008 and Glenglassaugh in 2013. Benriach was sold to Brown-Forman in 2016 and is still operating today.
