Founded in 1881 near Port Askaig on Islay, Bunnahabhain distillery is known for its uniquely mild taste among Islay whiskies, it diverges from the region’s typically peaty spirits. Originally under the Islay Distillery Company, it was acquired by the Highland Distilleries Company in 1887. Notably, Bunnahabhain was among the first locations on Islay to be electrified in 1894.
Historically supplied by ship, a road was constructed in 1960, with the last ship delivery in 1993. Despite closing in 1981, it was revived in 1984 due to increased demand. In 2003, it was acquired by Burn Stewart, later merging with Distell in 2014 Bunnahabhain is now one of nine active distilleries on the island, with its name translating from Scottish Gaelic to “Mouth of the River.”
